Medical Camps & Preventative Health Education
Even though the government is trying to provide medical assistance in rural areas, most good hospitals and doctors are located in the cities. Additionally, medical care is expensive and most laborers cannot afford it. This forces many villagers to travel long distances (up to a whole day’s journey) to receive affordable [quality] medical care.
By holding medical camps, villagers are treated at their doorstep. They are examined and medicines are dispensed free of charge. Occasionally they need more specialized care and are advised to go to the hospital.
Many diseases such as worm infestation, dysentery, skin infections can be prevented if people have a better idea of hygiene and nutrition. Medical camps allow the opportunity for health education in these areas. Over the years the incidence of such infections has decreased in the areas where the camps have been conducted.
